Say Alola really is as tiny as it looks so far.
There's 2 gyms and the League but nothing else.
But when you try to go to the League, they stop you saying you need 8 Badges.
Its around then that you challenge the Evil Team for the first time, and end up giving chase to them.
Your first stop is Kanto, where you get to battle your choice of one of the Gym leaders of that region. Doing so nets you a third badge and use of Cut.
Then you move on to Johto by foot, getting a fourth badge and use of Fly.
This continues until you have 8 badges, having traveled through every region. And here's the coolest part:
HM 01 = Cut. Kanto is half-forested, and even some of the cities (namely, Celadon and Viridian) have cut trees.
HM 02 = Fly. Johto is connected by land to Kanto, and Mt Silver serves as a base that you can fly to anywhere in one region or the other depending on where you are in the route.
HM 03 = Surf. No words needed; Its the Hoenn region after all.
HM 04 = Strength. Sinnoh has a giant mountain, and rocks. Lots of rocks.
HM 05 = Waterfall, but it could be something else (took the place of Flash) Now, Unova has almost no HM use but Dive could take this spot and Waterfall lose HM status.
HM 06 = Possibly a new move, cant decide whats most relevant to Kalos.
Note that at each region, youre basically just there PWT-style, where there's a bunch of people grouped up, you can do some region exploration but mostly just a feel for the area not really travel, and then pick one opponent
