Serious answer:
It was released at a time teenagers feared others knew they played pokemon. Also GF moved on and started to try new things which caused a lot of discomfort.
The result: tons of deserters that later came back in DP. And as they felt the "generational jump" was from gen2 to 4, it made a good part of them love gen4 and despise gen3 since a lot didn't live it at the time and even when they tried to play it, it felt like a step back from the "amazing jump" of going from 2 straight to 4.

All of this resulted in hoennfags being demonized in this place for years (and still are) which caused that specific "subfandom" to become cancerous with things like "hoenn remake when" as some sort of defensive response.
Then when things had started to calm down ORAS happened and fueled the embers.
And now we're here.

There are a lot of things wrong with RSE, but just like any other gen. It has it's positive points (which get constantly ignored), the region introduced variety to the franchise and the water routes "problems" tend to be exaggerated. From an objective point of view is just another region with its ups and downs.
The biggest flaws are the day/night cycle and how you couldn't transfer pokemon from previous games.
Now on the other hand, ORAS deserves all the shit it gets not only for how many opportunities were missed in its development, but also for how lazy GF has become.

HGSS also had a lot of missed opportunities. I don't think it's laziness on GF's part as much as it is not wanting to piss off the frothing turbonerds by not making the remakes "authentic" enough.
