Sun and Moon takes place in a completely different region, story, and by most people's definition, region than X and Y, but they are direct tie-ins. Gamefreak just doesn't want to spell it out for you and blurt out the entire plot and how exactly Alola is linked to Kalos this early before the games come out.
Black2 and White2 broke the third installment formula in favor of sequels since sequels are a strict upgrade from third installments for everybody in every way other than not being as easy or cheap to make as a rehash. This is also a pretty sweet visual of Gamefreak deciding to be less lazy in order to make sequels since sequels sell much better than an alternative edition to a game most of its consumer base already owns. It also makes sense to make it a new region with new Pokémon to further seperate it as a rehash.
Fight me all you want but screencap me now as I say we have moved into the era of sequels. And it is one of the best decisions Pokémon has ever made
