I came to the conclusion years ago that strategy guides were a secret ploy to make kids feel smarter.
You got the strategy guide so you could know everything about a game, but you also knew things the guides didn't. Maybe they name a Pokemon wrong, or forget about an item in the corner of a room, or the guide starts rambling and lets loose some hot opinions like Berton here.
As a kid, you got to look at that and think, "This is wrong and I know what's right. I know things that the man who wrote this book didn't." It was empowering, in a way.
As an adult you'd either be amused or just disappointed that you wasted your money on a bad guide.

I had the GS book as a kid. Near the end they talked about how even if you caught every Pokemon in their lists and traded up every RBY exclusive, you'd still be missing Pokemon from your Pokedex. But if you just LOOKED hard enough, you'd eventually find them, tee hee...
If I remember right, the only missing Pokemon was Celebi, so yeah good luck finding that in your game. (To be fair, I could have also made an error trying to tally up their guide.)
On a semi-related note they also refused to actually reveal the identity of some of the new Pokemon in the encounter charts, although I think they still appeared in the appendices. They also teased the existence of a "virus" but didn't actually talk about Pokerus any further.

Not to mention this guide seems to be mostly about the single-player game. And in-game, Blastoise can learn Earthquake, Dig, Ice Beam, and Blizzard, which means that it's essentially never at a real disadvantage against any type. It's a very reliable starter. And, yeah, Bubblebeam and Bite definitely help in the early game too.

I have this one. It was my favorite guide for a long time because it's so bad. The Pokédex is all fucked up, they speculate about the mystical Pikablu seen on trading cards and they have a merchandise section full of bootlegs and things I'm pretty sure don't exist (I tried to find that Pikachu with the band-aid/apple/whatever else it cane with so hard. Many trainers have their own unique AI. Misty is probably the most well known, with her turn 1 X item.
I've been binge watching Werster's speedruns this past month, and he highlights a lot of these different AI. I can't point to a specific example, but some of them are not at all what you'd expect. In addition, there seem to be pseudo random sequences, where guaranteed events are broken. Might be a hex issue, but this shit isn't well documented enough to know.
