Rowlett bowtie downright confirms it will be the ringleader. It is the first starter in the Alola dex so it is essentially the "leader".
Popplio has a clown nose and we can already see from its official artwork that it likes to do tricks because it is a sea lion. Sea lion performances are common circus acts.
And Litten is obviously going to evolve into a tiger. Tiger's are one of the most common animals at the Circus. Ever heard of the fire ring?

The themes started in Gen 4 where the first theme was mythos, with Gen 4 being the region to focus the most on the lore of the Pokemon world
Infernape is based on Sun Wukong
Torterra is based on the World Turtle
Empoleon is based on Poseidon, although its obvious its naming inspiration comes from Napoleon Bonaparte.
Before starters were just random animals picked out. It's good now that each set has themes because it is more consistent.

Gen 1 was all big reptiles. Gen 2 was Purity or Simplicity because of single typing but that's a stretch. Gen 3 possibly had a Stages of actual evolution thing going on with Amphibian>Reptile>Bird. Possibly had martial arts theme as well.

Gen 1's theme was common japanese household pets. Sugimori wanted kids to be able to pick between a toad, a lizard, and a turtle because they probably had one of these three at home already and could relate to it.
Gen 2's theme for the region was tradition and purity, which is why all the poison-types (crobat, qwilfish, ariados) were all natural as compared to gen 1's unnatural poison-types such as koffing or grimer. This is why the starters have the mono-typing.
Gen 3's starters having some martial arts shit makes no sense or they would've found a more martial arts signature move for swampert. >>26363921

Why the hell would Swampert get so buff and big? When its Mega was revealed a lot of people thought its typing was going to be Water/Fighting. It's Mega design is entirely that of a wrestler.
Maybe the theme wasn't present when gen 3 was being made but the attention they were given in Gen 6 really solidized their theme as different fighting styles.

The muktictural royalty thing was confirmed. I'd ont know about fighter/magr/rogue but it's pretty obvious. The others though I agree are a reach. I especially don't buy the household pet and purity thing. I'm sure Japan is as fond of cats and dogs and not frogs and lizards and shit as anywhere else. Pokemon is getting more and more formulated and regulated so I do believe that starters might have their final evolutions with an overarching them now but I'm sure this wasn't a thing back during RBY or GSC.

I agree that gen 4 and 7 are loose and I don't think there is a major theme, but gen 5's theme was very prominent. IIRC Sugi or someone literally said the 3 starters were designed in a European, Chinese, and Japanese style.
