I just put a ditto up there without saying anything. They always take them and I don't feel bad.
I like to take the 6IV ditto thing one step further.
I catch a regular shitty ditto with shitty IVs, then EV train it just enough so that its stats look like a 6IV ditto to someone who just checks its raw stats, so they'll hopefully go ahead and use it wondering why they're not hatching 4-5IV 'mons.

Trading the hatched pokémon I didn't need through the Wonder Trade, with the hopes of getting one I didn't had.
And in one specific occasion, I was looking for Emolga in the GTS. Since I I was trying to avoid all the requests for Legendary pokémon, I just swiped through until I found one that requested a pokémon I had and didn't need. It wasn't until I did the trade that the Emolga was a Shiny and that the person probably asked for another Shiny too.

As long as you don't fuck with the data structure you shouldn't have any issue. Whether you get something legal is more dependent on what the ROM changes, though.
