They did jack diddly to differentiate it from Charizard aside from taking away the Flying type. they could have done something like swap the Speed and Special Attack values but that kinda mucks with the whole dynamic they had going only (Meg-Defensive, Fer-Physical, Typh - Special)

Cyndaquil line was always "on" in the old games because there was only one sprite shown in battle. In the anime and every animated sprite/model the Cyndaquil family has off an on flames

I always found the middle evos for starers kind of odd in some ways Like how Charmeleon is more reddish in color, Quilava's lower back fire, Wartortle's ears and tail, Bayleef's yellowish color and so on
