It kinda strikes me as a pure water type. It's been a while since the last non-dual type starter so I'd be all up for it.
I still think that Water/Psychic is a good guess, considering Psychics have a lot of magician themes, and circus tricks are a form of magic.

Popplio will gain Fighting as its secondary typing to beat out Litten's secondary Dark typing, and Rowlet remains as is.

The fighting could very well be for Litten, or Solgaleo, or a completely unannounced pokemon.
Rowlet - Flying/Fighting
They talk a lot about how fast Rowlet is, and it throws its quills like shurikens or throwing knives.
Litten - Fire/Ground
Volcano cat. The spikes on its back become permanent
