Too boring, literally just "it gets bigger". Also the mouth on the first stage looks a bit weird, hanging off to the side like that. Looks more like some creepy hole in its cheek rather than a mouth.

I really, really dig the gladiator theme, great idea. It does need some more differentiation between the stages to avoid "it just gets bigger" syndrome, though. To start with, the first form needs to be smaller and cuter. Maybe make it a normal-ish looking quadruped calf. Also, consider taking some inspiration from Water Buffalo. Still though, great idea with the gladiator stuff.

the grass line is based off of kachina dolls. which are generally pretty goofy looking.
you're right about the water and fire lines being a bit to samesy throughout. i think the grass line is actually the most successful as far as the progression, but yeah, they are very weird. i would expect most people to like the water line best and the grass line worst. although the final stage of the grass has more appeal than the first two stages.
i will probably go back and revise all of them at some point. thanks for you input man.

Lore can only justify so much, and this is not one of them. Moreover, drawing a mountain and then adding a face to it won't win many people over and isn't a creative design overall, Torterra pulled this off much better by not only adding an actual creature into the mix, but also being a subtle reference to the world turtle. Key word being subtle. Lastly, having one large feature in one stage and then removing it the next stage is generally taboo.

Sorry for the late reply I was at work. I haven't nailed down a good look for the evos, so I've been trying to work on the other two starters. Pic related's the grass/poison starter. Some other anons have been helping me with my fire rabbit starter in recent threads, and I think I've about got a finalized look for it.

I was planning on a bulky Special attacker for the final evo with Water/Fairy as its typing (goldfish are hardy and considered slow swimmers so that's what I'm basing its stats off of). Maybe something like 100/65/80/109/80/60? To me it doesn't matter much since it's not a real Pokemon and at the moment I'm not putting it in a game or anything.

An old favorite of mine. I love dog Pokemon/fakemon, especially when they're not just a generic dog, but rather a specifc breed. There could be a whole game of just Pokemon based on all the different breeds of dogs
I ended up wanting to come up with an evo for my goldfish starter. I thought about making its tail fins go downward like in pic related, but I'm not sure what else I could do to it to make it better. I want the final evo to have a masquerade-esque mask that's butterfly shaped, but with the middle stage I'm not sure how to transition to that.
