It isn't completely confirmed but lots of people have been speculating that Alola's starters are a circus act: Ringmaster Rowlet, Clown Popplio and Flaming Hoop Jumper Litten
as far as I know the other gens didn't have a running theme uniting all three

Gen 1 starters are all types of reptiles. Venusaur; "sauros, meaning 'lizard' or 'reptile'". Blastoise; tortoises are reptiles. Charizard; lizards are reptiles. Basically they are dinosaurs (lol fitting for a first gen).
Gen 2-5 is much harder. There might be some Journey to the West in Gen 4 with Infernape but the other two would require more knowledge about the story. Maybe gen 4 is chinese myths or something.

Design-wise I think Greninja's pretty good, but the tongue being constantly outside bothers me because it would dry out pretty fast.
I dislike its popularity, because it overshadows the other starters, just like Charizard (which has a pretty bland design IMO).
I hate every pokemon that gamefreak blesses with a big movepool, good stats and good abilities until they pick my favourite pokemon to give good moves, abilities and stats.

Gen 4 is myths (Empoleon is Neptune/Poseidon, Torterra is the World Turtle, and Infernape is Sun Wukong) and gen 5 is royalty from different places (Samurott is Japanese, Emboar is Chinese, Serperior is European)
1-3 don't really have cohesive themes. Bulbasaur is more of a frog than anything but it looks mammalian as well. I've heard gen 2's starters stay monotype because they represent purity, since the Johto region is less polluted than Kanto.
