Everytime new starters have been introduced, those games cannot battle with the previous games.
Gen 2 can't battle Gen 1, Gen 3 can't battle Gen 2, Gen 4 can't battle with Gen 3, etc.. Now that we have new starters which marks the beginning of the next gen just like every other game, SM will not be able to battle with XYORAS. BW and DP are on the same systems but they are not battle compatible, same with RBGY and GSC.
This is another case of that, you KNOW it to be true you just refuse to believe it for some ungodly reason.
