The gyms could just be random buildings, like the hotel in the reveal trailer. That's not the point though. If you were to show OP's image to ANYONE in the Pokemon community, they would say this small island isn't it. Hell, ask people that don't know shit about geography and they'd tell you this is only one of the based Hawaii islands

Because look at the damn map and think about it for a second. Do you actually believe all 8 gyms, the elite four, and the evil team's hideout are all on the one map? This isn't some in-game map where every city is represented with a dot. You can see buildings in this one. And while there will likely be more or less buildings in the actual game, do you really thing they could fit everything in such a small area?
Hell, that's not even taking into account the different environments that have become a staple to Pokemon regions. There's no desert or frozen area that can be seen. At most there's a forest, but that's it.

I just thought of an idea... since the region is vacationy, how about instead of running around the island 8 times, you visit the hotel on different days, and a random gym leader from all gens vacation there, and you can battle them for a badge... so they come to you, essentially.

To be fair, all of those regions (the Japan provinces, the NYC metropolitan area, and Paris and its countryside) were definitely large enough to function as their own region. Otherwise, the scale gets kind of messed up since you have to represent the entirety of Japan/NY/France with only ~12 locations.

The question is not if they can make an entire region of only one small Island. They can use the scale they want to, we've seen that.
But we have a map of the Island they had in the trailer, and there are only two Pokecenters, and even if you look at the roads themselves and compare with what we see in the trailer, you'll notice this one Island is too small for a complete region.

ALL the right side of the island is a plain path that seems to lack tall grass, and even the screenshots anon placed confirms this. So that's half your region being a fucking void, and the other left bottom half is buildings and the port thing that ALSO lack wild encounters.
Even if there's another island just like this one at the bottom or top, we're pretty much screwed because of the very configuration of it...

Is it confirmed that n°1 is the Player's house? If so, we could have a slightly different scenario than what we usually have.
Maybe the guy in white finds us at the player's house and accompanies us through the grass all the way to n°8. It would remind me when, in D/P, the rival of the other gender would go with us at the beginning of the game to show us how to catch a Pokemon. Except here, the guy serves as a guardian of some sort until we get the starters.
Though it would seem far fetched to go that far just to go through a patch of grass with no pokemon.
Or maybe it's a coup "à-la-Hoenn" : You've just arrived, guy in white shows you around before leading you to the starter area, so that you can then discover your house?
