The owl starter is basically a ball, and it definitely doesn't have any sort of visible neck. Pic related just looks like a normal, slightly short owl with some green on its neck. Not round at all.

It doesn't. Pokémon has huge amounts of fanart, and the few franchises that rival it has tons of shitty art too.
Also what qualifies as boring is subjective, at least stuff like what you posted is very well done.
