I thought that the gen 2 starters were based of of traditions, which would explain why they don't get a second typing and why they essentialy just get bigger when evolving.
I thought grass starters always had a prehistoric animal theme, fire starters were based on the chinese zodiac and water starters were always amphibian creatures (animals that can live both on land and water)
Not sure about the new owl grass starter unless it evolves into some sort of prehistoric terror bird or something.

They're not necessarily circus "animals" but people have been saying that Rowlet's little bowtie looking leaves would suggest it ends up looking like a ringmaster. I think it's pretty plausible, especially with Popplio's very heavy clown-esque theme. In any case, I like all of the designs this gen.
