I don't know what it is about these starters in particular that makes me so iffy but these honestly look like fakemon

That's the case with every new starter reveal.
For me, it's the colors.
Litten is really dark compared to the past 6 fire starters-- both its black and red shades are really out of place with the others.
Popplio is a darker shade of blue and Rowlet has more brown than green. Just different than what I'm used to.

I feel the same about Litten. When you put it next to the other fire starters, it clearly stands out.
