I think the idea is that being "edgy" is now associated with being "tryhard". Edginess is not inherently a bad thing, it just means that it is some sort of new style that likely clashes with current societal norms or at least the current mindset the fans of a genre of some media product have.

I always liked monsters and my mother was a fan of horror movies. That has nothing to do with "bad oerson"- thing.
However nowadays society has many hypersensitive people that cant deal with anything that is not "soft", or "cute".
Monsters with spiky designs, or non souless (generic cute marketable mascot-face) facial expression (anger, grumpyness) triggers them, because these things are the most expressive and colorful.
They call these things with a buzzword "edgy", but at the same time they being edgelords because their hypersensitivity cant allow them tolerate anything that is different than their family friendly design and dull face.
This is kinda my problem with pokemon community. Over past years the amount of this kind of grew insanely big. They hate everything that is different, and make pokemon art look cringy and autistic.
