I tried using Emboar recently, after using Serperior in Black and Samurott in Black 2.
Emboar was easily the most fun I've had with a starter, and I think its because it had an interesting movepool and defined role in battle (Heat Crashing mons and surprising them with Scald was great).
Serperior and Samurott don't really excel at much battle-wise, and have little synergy in teams. If they both weren't mono-typedand Samurott was standingthey'd see more use, I reckon.

I've always had a thing for inorganic Pokemon, and Geodude fit that niche while also being a fairly early route Pokemon. Used it both in gen 2 and 3, and it has always been there for me, even though I couldn't evolve it past Graveler since I had no friends. Since its so slow, I slapped a quick claw on it, and it always seemed to pull through for me when it really counted, like getting a clutch Rock Slide in on Lance's last Dragonite, when I was down to just him.

Man this is some fucking bullshit. You can't change my past, you sonofabitch. I've only seen 3 shinies in my life. A poochyena around the time Gen 3 came out, never caught it because I ran out of pokeballs. I thought it was a bug so I never thought anything of it.
Second was a Golbat I saw in Victory Road, caught that shit and trained the shit out of it.
Third, and the only one that I still have, is a Smeargle that I got in Emerald.
