I started with Red version in '98 and have played every generation since. Actually idk where I would rank Gen 1 starters, they were great too but because I've known them for so long they seem boring to me. But damn Charizard is still so badass after all these years. Gen 2 and Gen 3 remain tied for my favorites, and like I said, I'd put them as tied for best starters. I guess I'd say Gen 1 and Gen 4 are tied for second-best, in my opinion. Gen 4 starters are extremely badass, I think. If you want to know what the shittiest starters actually are, look no further than Gen 5

I've been playing the series since R/B/Y, I still remember getting a little infocard/advertisement about the upcoming Gold and Silver while at the movies seeing the first movie (for probably the third time) and freaking the fuck out.
I don't see what starters have to do with when you started the series, hell I didn't even like D/P that much at the time but I still recognise that overall they are probably the best starters. Best Grass starter we've ever had and high tier Water/Fire starters. Almost every other gen has at least one shit starter but not Gen 4.

Chimchar is great, Monferno is badass and Infernape is okay.
Turtwig and Grotle were good designs but Torterra definitely has a large following.
Piplup was good, Prinplup was decent and Empoleon is also popular.
Compared to something like Meganium or Emboar (who I still like but don't have a big following), Gen IV starters are really solid. Nothing bad about them, but still not spectacular.

Gen 4 was great because they were the first starters where all final stages would be dual typed alongside the grass and water having unused type combos. The design and concept for all of them were nearly flawless as well
