He's not the professor, it's Kukui (which by the way is the name of a traditional Hawaiian tree).
Hala hand you the starters. Kukui is the official professor of the region. Idk the relation between the two. Maybe they are relatives like in genV? Or master and pupil?

Why would you think that Kukui is the professor ? I feel like he's just a guide and a friend of the actual professor ( Hala ) and may even be a gym leader.
Hala and Kukui are both names of Hawaiian trees, so it's sort of vague at the moment.
If Kukui is the professor then what's Hala ?

1. Kukui is wearing a lab coat, like every professor.
2. Kukui is named after the State Tree of Hawaii, arguably more important that the Mala tree.
3. He is shown in the same type of screen as the "choose your skin tone and gender" screen, meaning he is the one to introduce you to the world of Pokemon.
Hala might just be the village elder who gives out the starters, or maybe the former professor, or Kukui's dad or something.
