Is gf returning to simpler pokemon designs? If so I'm pretty excited to see what's in store for the rest of SM

they're simpler in the wrong way. It's still the sanitized oversized head cutesy cartoony bullshit they've been doing.
>>
Yes. Sugimori said this was the direction they were going.

As a whole, Gen 7 is going to be the biggest Gen 1 inspired Gen. Not a Genwun pandering Gen like XY, but inspired. Rowlet is a dual-type grass starter, you have one rival, etc etc. It's going to be another soft, or potentially even medium/hard reboot as were all the Odd Numbered Gens (1,3,5,7)

I expect 150 new mons.
>>
>>26261266
bro calm down

it's mostly down to a change in Sugimori's artstyle

and that list is cherrypicked as fuck

Where have you seen baby seals that had heads take up 40% of their body? Do you live on a different planet?
>>
>>26261448
Aren't the Whiskers supposed to be painted on since it's got a clown theme? You know facepaint and all that jazz. Seems odd to complain about a design choice that thematically makes sense.

Do you have any of these for the 3rd to 4th gen? Because that's when I noticed a big change in art direction.
>>

Ivr heard it said that's what they said they were doing but these designs don't strike me as any more "simple" than starters usually are. I guess seal kind of is but it's sorely missing the details anyway.

I ask again, just why should we consider a cartoony look to be aesthetically inferior to realism?
>>
>>26261511
So you want all Pokemon to literally be my Mom's animals instead of something a bit more unique?
>>
>>26261589
Because when pokemon first came out pokemon actually seemed to still have some kind of depth to the designs. Now everything is way to cartoonish not enough realism.

The franchise is called Pocket Monsters. Not Pocket Animals.

they don't have to be realistic. Bulbasaur can be argued to be the starter that least looks like anything realistic yet it still looks like something natural because it doesn't have retardedly cartoony proportions and it has some detail. Same with Pidgey. it actually looks the LEAST like a real life bird compared to the other regional birds but they still gave it detail.

Now I'm not questioning that Pokemon is more cartoony, but what do you mean by 'still have some kind of depth to the designs'? This is essentially weasel wording, as this is an ambiguous claim to make.
>>
>>26261693
>oversized eyes
Lol
You're actually retarded and think there can't be any differentiation from real life animals
>>
>>26261625
No, but I appreciated the extra texture and roughness that the earlier designs had.

Game freak has deviated from the gen 1-3 style so much that nothing nowadays even resembles the old designs.

artstyle shifts are bound to happen, whether or not they are better or worse is going to be more often then not subjective and unless you are able to make rational reasoning as for why (without making assumptions that one style is inherently worse, you need to prove that) it may not be a good idea to flaunt your opinion as fact.

Incorrect. He stated that he personally preferred simpler designs.
http://www.siliconera.com/2013/11/07/pokmon-art-director-wants-next-generation-simpler/

>After being asked how he’d like to work on the next Pokémon title, Sugimori answers that rather than adding a lot and making it more complex, he’d rather go back to simpler ways, while having elements similar to what was offered in Pokémon Red and Green (Pokémon Blue outside Japan) to see how it would turn out.

>Sugimori mentions that just because he feels that way, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Pokémon’s seventh generation will be going that way; however, he adds, the idea of going back to a simpler form still remains a possibility.

Don't spread misinformation.
>>
>>26262024
Gengar and Spiritomb are the spookiest ghosts.
Duskull and Giratina are top tier tho
>>
>>26262060
ty for the correct info!

His preference for going back to "simpler ways" reminds me of this one thread where everyone went on and on about how good Gen 2 was at being, well, sorta simple & comfy.
>>
>>26261568

Anon probably didn't make these. Just one of those who blindly follow muh simplicity mentality when really shit from the eaely generations aren't that much different when looked at as a whole. Hence the cherrypicking.

>>
>>26261693

Okay, in no way am I defending Gothorita's design but have you actually seen a real gothic lolita? The dresses are usually simple and the one in the design actually very closely resembles the real deal. The skirts actually do poof out like that, its called a petticoat, and it gives it volume. Just because its not drawn as flowing like Jynx's dress doesn't mean its less detailed, they're two different kinds of dresses with different shapes. The only thing they could have added to the design to make it more detailed would be lace but at its heart gothic lolita is a very simple style, especially compared to its counterparts like sweet and even classic lolita.
>>
>>26262060
The issue with newer Pokemon has never been one of simplicity/complexity despite what /vp/ may have you believe. It's mainly due to a shift in the morphology of the designs.
>>
>>26262024

Nigger, are you stupid? I'M ON YOUR FUCKING SIDE. I was agreeing with OP on the Simpler designs. Why the fuck are you arguing with me?
>>
>>26263092

Yeah, but think about being home alone during a storm when the lights go out. You blindly make your way to the kitchen to find some candles to light until the power comes back on. As you're digging around in the drawer by the fridge, you hear a sudden creaking behind you and you whirl around. A flash of lightning illuminates that "DO IT FAGGOT" face which is mere inches away from you before everything goes black again.

Pokemon have always had both cartoony and and more serious designs.
