I don't mind friendly rivals if they're conceptualized and executed well. They're off to a good start with this guy because he has a much more interesting design and his personality is really clear in his animations and expressions. He also fits the Hawaiian setting.

I have a casual friend IRL who played gen1 once, then jumped into BW2 and just chose the fat pokemon. His fat team would've been a far better rival/friend team.
I'd like to see another rival duo, sort of like BW1 but taken a bit further. The disadvantaged rival is pretty much the same as most of the Gen3+ rivals: Someone who's very buddy-buddy, maybe too clingy and generous at times. The rival with the advantage is actually friendly at first, but they take battles way too seriously.
As time goes on they prioritize victories over anything else, and by lategame they're starting to be a resentful asshole over losing to you all the time. It doesn't need to go so far that they go full-on antagonist, and once they get a talking to before/after the final battle they mellow out and apologize. But until then, if the writers still want to push friendship, they can just make the weaker rival appear after the main rival's big blow-ups and cheer on the player.
In short: Let one person be the cheerleader so that the other one's free be a jerk. Add and mix other traits to taste if you want - personally I like the idea of the rival with the disadvantage turning out to be your strongest rival in the end, and even a rival defecting to the villain team is fun to think about now and then.
Honestly as long as the writing don't spread itself so thin again and try to give us half a dozen shallow "friends" instead of just one or two characters, I don't think I'll mind the rival(s) too much.
