I don't like the design but there's more to it than that. Look at the art and the animations. The way it moves captures the essence of a trained deal or and circus tricks perfectly. It's much better than covering it in stars or some shit to get the point across that it's a circus or performing seal.

I think its a goofy design. I like it in the same way I like Patrick Star in Spongebob. The puppy dog look is cute, and I can imagine training with it and see it fail at first, but then becoming stronger as it evolves. Its an underdog design and I love it.
