People figured out the Gen 6 starters' theme just off their basic stages alone. Granted most people just guessed "thief" for Froakie, not specifically ninja, and there were still plenty of incorrect guesses as well. But it's certainly possible, especially if you pay attention to 'dex flavor text.

I think that the three starters will be based off of the three basic elements discovered by Aristotle; grass, water, and fire.
The cat represents fire due to its red and black color as well as its ability to expel flame, the sea lion represents water due to sea lions' oceanic roots. The owl was harder to pinpoint but by process of elimination we can assume it represents grass.
More evidence of this comes from the fact that the region takes place in a Hawaii expy, a land known for its lava flows, rivers, and large grassy fields.

That makes sense, given that was the region's overarching theme. By the same merit, Unova was the first region not set in Japan, hence the international starters theme. Gen 6 took place in psuedo-Europe like most generic RPGs.
