Since Gen 4 they started looking mechanical
I never understood how people can say "this looks like a digimon".
Even the most "digimon"-esque Pokemon still look like Pokemon to me. It's all in the art style, Sugimori makes Pokemon look like Pokemon. He could draw Digimon and they'd look like Pokemon.

Digimon designs are more complicated and have unnatural parts.
Pokemon never stray too far from cuteness by some measure, puts geometry over biology giving us guys whose head are just balls pinned to a round body.
It's not about art style, it's concept.
