Gen 5 was the only time I did a no-starter play through on the first run of a game. I liked Snivy's design best, but it has literally 0 redeeming qualities other than that.

Gen I: My bother picked Charmander and I'm younger, so I wanted to win. I still love Blastoise (kinda meh on its mega though)
Gen II: I despise the Totodile line. Feraligatr makes me want to throw up. Chikorita seemed like the "girly" choice to 2001 me. Typhlosion and Meganium are rather boring, but I still prefer Typhlosion to either.
Gen III: I love Mudkip, am freaked out by Marshtomp, but love Swampert. Again, meh on its mega though. I warmed up to Blaziken a lot since Gen VI debuted.
Gen IV: The water steak continues. I think Empoleon and its typing are pretty legit, and am not the biggest fan of monkey Pokemon or turtles not named Blastoise and Torkoal.
Gen V: Lesser of the evils here. I love Samurott, though Oshawott should by no means be its first form. Deign-wise, Emboar may be my least favorite ever, and Serperior is boring (why does it lose its legs?)
Gen VI: The streak is broken here. I'm not actually a huge fan of the designs of the final forms, but Fennekin and Braxien are the shit. I wish Delphox looked a bit better.
Gen VII: Early returns are saying Rowlett, but I think Poppilo has potential to have a pretty tough-looking final form (see: Piplup, Chimchar)
My taste is shit, but I have my reasons for it, at least. :^)

These were my first choices for all the gens so they grew on me. Im still a little on the fence about gen 7 so i just chose Litten for now.

I've always had a soft spot for fire pokemon in general.
Judging purely design-wise (since that's all we have to go by), I like Litten the best so far, but the owl is also A+. I'll have to see what the evolutions are like, but I'll probably end up going with Popplio.

I can kinda see Tepig being divided, but I thought Snivy and Oshawott were well liked (in Oshawott's case, probably after the anime since the original art was admittedly not especially flattering). Snivy has that a nice, regal design to it that reminds me of an oujousama waifu, while Oshawott is just plain adorable (plus the scalchop makes an awesome compliment) What's the deal now?
