Full-on character creation ala TES and Souls and what not wouldnt work, kids would get bored of having to make their character instead of just quickly jumping into the game. The XY and now SM method of choosing a preset on the start, and then being able to change their hairstyle, eye color, clothing, etc. as the game progresses works better. Kids cant do it when they feel like it, and dont end up getting bored and losing interest when all this stuff is frontloaded on them at the start of the game.
