so are these legendaries supposed to be mechs/robots of some sort? both are really inorganic looking and have what look like LED displays for their eyes. being man-made would fit with magearna if it's going to be featured in Sun/Moon as well

That's just how the super legendaries tend to work.
They're divine entities embodying everything that "Sun" and "Moon" represent, not living creatures. Be thankful they took on the form of a lion and bat instead of something that'd give you a seizure just for looking at it.
