who is right
It depends on which context to which they're referring. If you're talking about the single player story, then Karen is right. Gentleman is correct when it comes to multiplayer and competitive play.
Utilising your favourite pokemon properly and winning battles with that Pokemon even if it is unviable does indeed make you a truly skilled trainer.
The gentleman is not wrong too, sometimes you do have to go with the higher BST's if you want to win when people of similar skill clash and it just becomes a number/crits game at that point.
Both of them are right.
Karen is a timmy, Gentleman is a spike.
Now we just need a trainer who advocates crazy combos and we'll have our johnny

The ones that win battles.
So probably not the one that everyone here has mercilessly beaten in battle.

>Truly skilled trainers should be prepared to watch their team fail a hundred times, because that one time it works will be so fuckin' worth it.

Except that it is virtually impossible to do this against a player that is decent. Unless you play favorites that also happen to be good, getting 6-0'd over and over because your team is too weak to have any chance of winning isn't very fun.
If you beat a top tier team with weak pokemon then you're beating somebody who isn't very good so it doesn't count for much.

It's Karen, we follow the words of the Elites.
