I see it as similar to the Junipers in gen V. With Kukui being the main prof while Hala is retired/focusing on something different but still appearing from time to time.

Someone pointed out that Hala is a type of tree native to the Pacific Islands and Hawaii, as well.
Maybe Hala is Kukui's father or something, and there's a Prof. Juniper and Papa Juniper thing going on.
