I think Greninja spoiled me. I was always used to having unpopular bros, so when people were booing Froakie, i dealt with it and payed it no mind. But then Greninja became one of the most popular pokemon ever and landed himself in all the right spots. In terms of ninja scarf representation, i think it makes perfect sense. Most people tend to forget that his tongue is an actual part of his body which he can control. Not only does it add the common red-ish scar color in ninjas, but this scarf isn't merely a piece of cloth; It is fully prehensile, insanely strong, retractable and combat ready, therefore making even more sense overall. I was unhappy with it on first impressions but the more I see it, the more it grows on me.
It's definitely passed the threshold of mentally recognizing it as a pokemon and faster than the other two did, even though I like them both more.
I was committed to the water type this gen though so it's a good thing, I guess. My main problem really is more what it's not than what it is.

Actually, Froakie fans WERE hipsters until the whole Quilladin thing blew over. Then he was quite literally, the most obvious popular choice. There was a transition. Chespin was by default, one of the most popular picks because everyone thought he'd be Oshawott. Then Quilladin happened. Many people who were by Chespin's side suddenly found themselves either transitioning to Fennekin or Froakie because they were afraid of what he'd might turn into.
Then again, I'm going by memory, so don't trust me on this one.
