I don't have any inherent problem with that. I think Chespin's design was hurt by giving it the Pikavhu ish body shape when hedgehog or porcupines would have been better served by a spherical shaped body IMO. Also it's feet and arms were kind of big and gangly I guess to make its silhouette more different from Pikachu. I don't necessarily have a problem with Chespin's butbthose would be my issues with its design off the top of my head. I think starters should prominently feature their types color, even if it's only to the extent that Litten does it, for example. The only green on Rowlet are the two tiny leaf details on its chest and I don't care for that. Not saying every grass type had to be green, just that I think starters should lean towards that because it makes for very distinctive and popping images when all the starters are together in a shot.

Good stats would be a nice start. I could see it having something close to Sceptile's stats, but physically oriented, and with slightly more power and slightly less speed.
Grass/Flying is actually a pretty decent offensive typing, only about 35 Pokémon currently resist it and nothing is immune, so it's pretty set there. As long as they don't make it slow and defensive then it should actually be pretty good.
Grass and Flying also have a lot of good moves going for them, and with it being an owl I could see it getting an array of Psychic and Dark-type moves as well.
Ability could be anything. Gale Wings is obviously the impossible dream but if it got Tinted Lens like Noctowl does then it'd still be pretty damn good. Failing that, Soundproof would fit it pretty well too.

From the moment I saw the new starters at arrival time, I was smitten by Rowlet at first sight. Although, I was also shocked and kind of flipping out because the color scheme matched Roothoot's, but then I realized it looked 10x better than that Finn piece of shit with it's awful mouth-beak thing. Not gonna lie, I was part of the shitposting wave associated with that fake (But only during the first 2 weeks, after that I got bored of it). I'm so glad it actually is an owl but at the same time sad that it's Grass/Flying. It weirds me out seeing Grass be dual type but the other 2 are single type.
Then I hear the cry it makes as it spins around in place. I instantly knew from there on it would be my starter. And it just kept getting better. When it FUCKING SWIVELED IT'S HEAD BACKWARDS DURING BATTLE TO LOOK AT YOU. Hot damn.
I really, REALLY like the design. It's modern yet simple. It's not complicated but it's also busy enough to be interesting. Everything fits and connects together. The two leaflets give it a bow tie appearance, it has a leaf in the back that resembles a coattail from a suit. It has a face of a halved apple and barn owl. It has green leaf pattern under its wings which explains its unique new move Leafage (Leaf + Plumage), and its called the Grass Quill Pokemon. The short stubby claw feet, the simple black owl-y eyes are cute. Only issue is the nose but its a minor nitpick, looking for phallic imagery is often forced by human minds. Its actually all around perfect and really sets the stage for what Gen 7 mon designs as a whole offer and are indicative of this time period.
I really do wonder how this lil fugger will look like when it evolves. For sure that plant bowtie will play a part in it.
(Also crossing fingers for some bullshit like Gale Wings to save its typing but barring that I can also take solace in having my Fly mon for ingame)

Popplio comes second with the lame bubble and Litten just raises its fur like a flame. You can clearly tell there is a bias like with Froakie. Plus it's a flying type. Gamefreak will make it good.

Owls use quick bursts of speeds to catch things. Just because they aren't long distance speed machines like other birds of prey, they're still pretty fast. They're just not long distance fliers and can't maintain the speed for long.

Hell, I can't even remember the last time I willingly used a grass starter. I used Sceptile when I played Emerald shortly before ORASstill not a fanand rolled for Snivy in B2 Nuzlocke I failed.

I think people are getting too hooked on that it uses kicks thing. I think it's just talking about attacking with its talons and not literally using fighting techniques. I feel like I've seen another pokedex entry that talked about a bird pokemon 'kicking" in the same way. I wouldn't bet on anything but a random double kick early on like a lot of random pokemon get.
