Its because the art direction for them is even worse than 4th gens.

Starters are supposed to look cute, then become "edgy spike/fang/clawed"

Box legendaries are designed to have 1 appear "cool" to males, and "pretty" to female players.

We have these... ugly things.

The game went full 3-d, but over all detail went down to make up for it. (Also every backdrop is ocean, like windwaker, just to make the game run better in 3d, main reason they couldnt do this in 6th gen.
