Pokemon were originally a handful of mystical creatures living alongside real world animals. This is why Gen 1 mons had such huge wizard-tier movepools. They were all magical.
They started phasing this concept out and now Pokemon officially replace animals. That's why we have designs like my mom's dog, why movepools have gotten smaller, why magical moves like Swift went from near universal to literally only a single Kalosmon, etc.
