It was either in Unite or 3 that they introduced the felyne companions.
They help so much just with occasionally distracting a monster so you can catch your breath.
Also shout out to MH4U for asctually having an engaging story. The Final Showdown with the Shagaru Magala was one of the most satisfying video game experiences I've had.
Something I find interesting, some monsters would be hard to give only two types because Monster Hunter is so varied.
Take Rathalos, for instance. Do we give Fire/Flying? Or Flying/Poison? Fire/Poison? Dragon type, since he's weak to Dragon element?

They're Wyverns not Dragons. Rathalos would be a Fire/Flying with the ability to learn poison moves. Rathian would be Poison/Flying with the ability to learn fire moves.
So like I'm a hunter and I bludgeon pokemon with my weapon then link the game to a pokemon game where I can use said bludgeoned pokemon?
Or am I playing a pokemon who hunts other pokemon?

It'd be two different games
In one game you hunt pokemon in the same way you'd hunt monsters in MH. Elder Dragons would be legendaries basically. Other large monsters would include mostly final evos but made to be bigger than you if they weren't already
and in the other it would play like a typical pokemon but with the MH monsters in place of pokemon.
Your fire starter would be Brachydios or maybe Agnaktor
Your water starter would be Lagiacrus or Zamtrios
Your grass starter would be Duramboros or a Green Nargacuga
Of course all three of them would have 3 stage evolution.
Jaggi and Great Jaggi would be your stand-in early on normal type like rattata
