Just like in every region he has GOTTEN to be good over time but, as people have said, every time he goes to a new region he forgets every goddamn thing he knows and decides to abandon his decent Pokemon. I understand that this is a children's show and it is designed that way so there is perpetually a new generation learning the mechanics of the universe but godDAMN, it makes for a terrible character for anybody who has seen more than whatever the current season is.
Also, he STILL falls for Team Rocket. STILL. They need to ditch the characters or use them more sparingly for comedic effect.

I've been watching the anime. I see no development. Saying that there is a bond between him and Greninja doesn't give the two of them any actual character bonding. Ash can be summed up with the following "traits"

You could literally replace Ash with a robot that compliments people and absolutely nothing would change. The only thing that makes him seem at all developed or special are the fact that he has a super strong Greninja and the fact that he is the protagonist, neither of which have anything to do with his personality.
The only characters in the anime right now with any sort of personality are Bonnie, Hawlucha, and Zygarde. Ash is bland, and is nothing more that a lifeless shell for Japanese children to interact with what will later be sold to them as merchandise.
