Seasons in the west are the ones established by the dub (Advanced Battles, Battle Dimension, Rival Destinies, etc). In Japan it can generally mean three things: the entire series of a generation (OS, AG, DP, etc), entire "sagas", as in, a streak of episodes that end once a major goal is achieved (Indigo League, Orange Islands, Johto League, Hoenn League, Battle Frontier, etc), and seasons with different subtitles (BW, BW2, BW Episode N, BW Da!).
All of them were used at least once under the name "season" (シーズン) in broadcast programming, DVD releases or other official material.
