Its probably because the saga is nearly over and Serena/Bonnie/Clemont got as much as the writers planned to give them.
Also unlike May and Dawn who the writers kept in focus to practically the tail-end of the series, the writers really don't have to do that with Serena aside from keeping her crush relevant. If you look through the AG and DP episode lists it amazes me that they kept May and Dawn relevant leading up to right before and after Ash's league and final eps.

With the lack of references to past sagas XY feels like it could take place in its own universe. Maybe have just Kanto for the backstory for Ash/TR and that's it. Really until Ash uses old pokemon again, it feels like nothing that happened in Johto, AG, or DP even matters in the XY era.
