As much as we bash the anime for all its faults and problems, if they ever decided to get rid of Ash by actually having him succeed or something I think I would cry. I've been following Ash's journey since day 1 (I'm getting too old for this) and even though I've had my issues with the anime I can't imagine it without Ash in it. Seeing his story arc end would be one bitter-sweet episode.

I would have cried like, 10 years ago when he had some resemblance of a character to care about.

No matter what though he is the same character. He's always been Ash and after reflecting on it ( blaze it) and watching some older clips, I have to say that we definitely give the anime way too much shit. It's literally been the same thing for years but you have to look past what you WANT it to be and appreciate it for what it is. A fantasy, a story about a kid who's trying his very best going on adventures with his best friends discovering new things about Pokemon everyday. Even the BW anime isn't as bad as we actually make it out to be, heck, BW was the season that most resembled the OS and it showed.

Then why do I cringe every time I try to watch an episode of it?

Because it gave way to the most embarassing moments in the entire anime series.
That and it came right after DP of all things.
