Trying to stay impartial with the explanation here. So about a month ago, someone posted on 2chan a picture of this owl, claiming that it was real. Everyone fell in love, and wanted it to be real, like how we normally do with leaks. Nobody actually believed it. Until the names "mokuroh, Nyabbi, and Ashimari" got trademarked. Due to the nature of these trademarks, they have a high chance of being real, but as with anything, we can't know until an official announcement. "Mokuroh" would be a very fitting name for a grass bird starter, and thus the legend of "roothoot" was born.
After that came endless war between those who believe this Pokemon to be real due to how legit it looks, and how the names and evidence all fit together, and those who believe that the lack of an official announcement, combined with no undeniable proof of legitimacy make it hard to believe.
