Yugi and Lelouch are fine because they have proper depth of character and rely on understanding the mechanics of the game and RNG abuse/political strategy to win. Taiki and Shoutmon however are missing anything beyond "work harder and you win", especially by the second arc. It was somewhat better in the manga where his personality was fleshed out with his desire to work to help others from thinking he ruined a friend's life with his own actions and showing him doing more field planning and formations than "Form Shoutmon X whatever and keep hitting until we win" so more of an army general feeling.
