He seems to have empathy, especially for pokemon (Animals) a trait not consistent with psychopathy, where a warning sign is mutilation, torture or otherwise harm of small animals.

I don't think he was a psychopath but we need to remember that for all of his life he was brainwashed and being manipulated by Ghetsis, he was kept up inside that castle for years being fed lies by his foster father. It would make sense for him to be a little strange when literally everything he knew was a lie.
