There's actually tonnes of lore and story scattered among the site. There's history, characters, events and even a working stock market. If you really look into it, Neopets has evolved into its own world.
The easiest way to make money is participating in events or contests, or restocking. There's also a shitload of guides on how to make 50k a day of you want to waste an hour every day.
The thing I hate the most about the site is the censorship, intense modding and banning, it's mostly adults on that site anyway.

Yea, my oldest pet is from year 3, it's on a side account.
That's insanely low price from way back before customization. Yea I have a ton in the stock market so I make $$ by just popping in every week or so. I think I was looking at Royal as well. She was the first painted pet I had, got a Christmas pb by random event when I was younger, so I've been reluctant to repaint her even though she would keep her Christmas clothing.
