It's not really that nonsensical, at least in the vague way types are usually set up. High special attackers, if they have any defense at all, typically also have high special defense, and thus have low regular defense to balance.
A Pokemon with high attack is able to hit them hardest at their weakest defense, while also having the high special defense to handle their strongest offense.
Sort of like a mage killer.
