Got my first Pokemon I guess.
It's an Axolotl but I refuse to say it's not a Mudkip.

Anon I think your Pokedex is severely in need of a database update, that's clearly a shiny Wooper. Lucky bastard.

Mudkip is closer to being a Mudpuppy/Mudskipper. Given the coloration of the OP's catch, it is very clearly a shiny Wooper and not a Mudkip.
>>
>>26144844
MUDKIP is a MUDsKIPper
>>
>>26144844
How do people not know that mudkip is a mud skipper? Like it's obvious.
>>
>>26145007
I just googled mudskipper and Mudkip looks nothing like that.
>>
>>26145007
Mudkip's name was based off of a Mudskipper, but if you look it up, he was based off of an Axolotl.
>>
>>26144900
>>26144802
Wooper is just a regular salamander, that's what young salamanders look like - with the external gills. It then evolves into an adult salamander, Quagsire, which does not have external gills as most adult salamanders are.

Axolotls are a neotenous species, meaning that that even the adult salamanders look like children, hence adult axolotls still have external gills. This is why Mudkip's line are at least partially based on axolotls, as even in their adult form (Swampert) they still retain external gills.
>>
Cool shiny Wooper
>>
>>26145189

I'm not sure how that matters at all when it is clearly 100% a shiny Wooper and not a Mudkip, shiny or otherwise.
>>
>>26145212
Shiny mudkip are pink too, though.

Anyway salamanders aren't naturally pink, it's a type of albinism that is commonly bred for among pet salamanders, including axolotls.
>>
Neither Wooper not Mudkip are Axolotls.

Wooper's line based on the larval and adult form of the Giant Salamander
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_salamander

Mudkip's line is based on the Necturus Salamander genus also known as the mudpuppy
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necturus
>>
>>26145232

Shiny Mudkip are purple, and their gills remain orange. The coloration is not correct at all. The OP clearly has misidentified their shiny Wooper as a Mudkip.

Sorry it ain't as cute as an Axolotl but here's your fucking Mudkip.
>>
>>26145294
How do you know what Mudkip's line especially is specifically? It's such a loose interpretation of what its supposed to be. The only really identifiable trait are the also very abstract gills.
>>
>>26145007
I meant mudpuppies, i get the 2 mixed up. If you google mudpuppies, they look a lot more a like.
>>
>>26145294
>>26145325

Mudpuppys have very small legs and long bodies though, giving them an almost serpentine appearance. Mudkip, in contrast, aren't as long and have much more noticeable legs, similar to an axolotl.
>>
>>26145330
The Japanese and English name for the Pokemon both actually directly reference Mudskippers, though the design actually more correctly reflects the characteristics of the Mudpuppy. Mudskipper and Mudpuppy are terms that often get mixed up and the German name for Mudkip actually directly referenced the Mudpuppy instead.

It's definitely somewhere between a Mudskipper and a Mudpuppy. Not an Axolotl.
>>
>>26145388
It's not related to mudskippers at all, and its body shape and fins more resemble an axolotl based on google searches for axolotl. I do feel the color scheme more closely resembles mudpuppies though, especially with the >>26145325
>>
>>26145388
Not surprising what with it being call a MUD kip. Kip also coming from skipper.

>>26145396
The Japanese name is literally a portmanteau of Water and Mudskipper. It looks and acts like a Mudpuppy and it has the name of a Mudskipper.

Axolotl isn't anywhere in there, it's just a similar creature to the one it's actually based on. Like for example that despite being an Owl Noctowl is not based on the Snowy Owl.
>>
>>26145440
Lots of Pokemon are named after something they aren't necessarily based on, and axolotl and mudpuppies are not that different when they're designed so abstractly. Google tells me though that actually there probably are bits of mudskipper in its design. The fins definitely look like they're from mudskippers. Mudkip's design is fucking confusing.
>>
>>26145396
"basd on google searches"

fuck off
>>
>>26145485
Is there a problem?
>>
>>26145440
mudskippers don't have fully formed limbs my dude, besides that, the gills look thick like an axolotl's

it's not hard to understand that it has elements of both
>>
>>26145461
>Lots of Pokemon are named after something they aren't necessarily based on
Like Mudkip which is named after a Mudskipper and based on a Mudpuppy. It's not that confusing.

Ursaring isn't a Polar Bear, Beartic is. They're both bears but there are different kinds of bear.

Mudkip and Wooper aren't Axolotls, they're different Salamanders.

>>
>>26145521

>>
>>26145506
Only because chilangos are disgusting creatures who throw garbage into Xochimilco, however, axolotls have no problems for breeding in captivity, so there's no real threat of them disappearing.
>>
>>26145506
Yes, I got him from a breeder. They're illegal in New Jersey, California, and you need a license in Hawaii.
>>
>>26145530
>implying owls are birds
>>
OP here
yeah I made a mistake, this is in fact a shiny Wooper. I love my Wooper.
>>
>>26145559
>Illegal in California

Fuck. I was tempted there for a second when I read the comment about thriving under breeder care. I wonder how harsh the punishment is if caught with one. The toughest part is probably getting one in the state.
>>
>>26145652
If it was a Wooper it'd be a larval Giant Salamander and become a Quagsire (Giant Salamander). What you got ain't a Pokemon (yet).

But feel free to pretend it's a bootleg substitute Shiny Wooper or Mudkip until they make an Axolotl Pokemon.
>>
>>26145679
What makes mudkip's line specifically a mudpuppy and not an axolotl?
>>
>>26145699
Design is a closer match, the naming theme is clearly in reference with the German name literally including Mudpuppy, stronger association with muddy waters which is the Swampert line's whole thing and signature attack. Mud is right there in the name.

The total lack of reference to the notable color variance among Axolotl too is pretty strong in my view.
>>
Just as a note to OP who gives a shit what different Pokemon are actually based on? An Axolotl is a way cooler pet than a Mudpuppy or Giant Salamander, Axolotls are cool and cute. And yeah they do still look like Mudkips and Woopers anyway so you name that shit what you want and you love your pet because it's a good pet.
>>
>>26145778
I don't think the design is a closer match. I actually think it looks closer to an axolotl (though not the pink/albino? ones) than a mudpuppy since they're so much more serpentine than Mudkip's line is. I don't know about the association with muddy waters and stuff though. I do think Mudkip actually is part mudskipper (its fins seem to come from them, whereas their body and gills seem to come from salamanders-- why they'd intentionally combine two animals easily confused by their name but are otherwise unrelated, I don't know) as well.
>>
>>26145503
Wooper is named Axoloto in my language.
>>
>>26145887
I mean considering Quagsire that's clearly wrong as Axolotls are neotenic and Wooper evidently isn't.

But with Mudkip we shouldn't be so fussed about which specific neotenic aquatic salamander it's based on.
>>
>>26145920
>implying ALL wooper evolves.
>>
>>26145189
This anon knows.

The only difference is other larval salamanders lose their gills after aging.

Only some varieties like axolotls do not.

Mudkip is a mudskipper you autistic faggots. It's right in the name.

I'd say the mudkip line takes a lot of insperation from both, especially with those fan-shaped dorsal fins.
>>
>>26145941
They all evolve at level 20
>>
>>26145962
Yeah I think they definitley have mudskipper fins with a salamander body. Don't know why they'd combine them other than to intentionally fuck with people who are overly concerned about what a pokemon is specifically based on.
>>
>>26145975
Pokemon draw from many sources. I mean try to have a discussion about what ONE creature Cyndaquil is based on.

Even the japanese names aren't always correct. They're as willing to very loosely or outright incorrectly name something if it suits whatever pun or joke they want to convey as other languages. In general its pretty fast and loose.
