If there's going to be an Oni, it should definitely be Legendary. Or at least a somewhat pseudo-legendary like Volcorona if the pre-evolutions are that essential.
I'd love it if there were some Japanese oriental style dungeon you have to explore to find the Oni at the end. A difficult task but worth it thanks to it's high stats. Oni pretty much personify Japanese 'legends', so it would be a shame if it evolved from some common shitmon.

I think it's acceptable to have animal-like Pokemon representing the same or similar species, but filling a different niche in the Pokemon world. I think a Pokemon based on a peccary (like a white-lipped peccary in pic related) would be Normal/Ground and have access to the abilities Thick Fat and Anger Point.
I might post more speculative stuff. I enjoy these threads a lot.

Russian and Canadian nature is largely the same, like I'm sure that ~70% of species are the same or closely related.
And I know that beaver is Canadian national animal or something, but they also live in many European countries, Russia and USA, so I'd hardly call it "Canadian" pokemon.
Does Canada have any endemic species? Russia has a lot, but they are mostly similar to other widely spread animals or so narrowly known that I doubt they'll ever have pokemon based on them.

There was a fakemon I really liked that was a split evolution for Sableye of Mothman and that umbrella waisted onion head cryptid alien that I like but always forget the name of. I really liked that. Mega Evolution killed it though. I really hate the Mega is just a bigger Sableye. They could have gotten real creative and now Sableye might not get a real evolution.
