Entei isn't really anything specifically, it's an amalgamation of a couple of different animals like Suicune and Raikou are. That's why I prefer the term "legendary beasts" for them rather than cats or dogs.
Anyway, even assuming all of those were lions that's still only 3 evolution lines and 6 pokemon in total. Meanwhile, we have 12 different frogs from 4 lines (Poliwag, Froakie, Tympole, Croagunk), 8 different turtles from 4 lines (Squirtle, Turtwig, Tirtouga, Torkoal), 11 different mice and rats from 6 lines (Rattata, Pichu, Azurill, Plusle, Minun, Deddene), etc. We hardly have an abundance of lions.
