Do you think The Battle Between Legendary is canon?
I mean it's a stretch, but Red doesn't have a Mewtwo on his team on Generation II, so you think it's possible, canonically, a lot of the legendaries just ended up getting caught by type specialists?

Yes it is canon. Just because it isn't on his team, doesn't mean he didn't catch it. Plus, you can't catch it in Gen 2, proving it further that Red caught it. Also, it makes sense that he doesn't have it on his team, since it would be weird to have two Mewtwos possibly battling each other (back in the day, now we canonically have two Mewtwos) Also Time Capsule was the only way to get Mewtwo in Gen 2, from Red. So yeah, he did catch it.
As far as i know unless specified by the story the player simply battles the legendaries.
