I don't understand the hate for Greninja's tongue scarf. Ninjas keep their faces hidden, and frogs have extremely long tongues that are long enough wrap things. How is that on a literal "frog ninja" a very flawed design choice?

People rail on Meganium because its design is extremely simple for a fully evolved starter. Also due to its stats and movepool, its not seen as viable both in competitive play and in-game.
You can fly through the game with Typhlosion and Feraligatr, but Meganium makes the process a little more difficult, since most of the Gym Leaders trump Meganium's pure Grass typing.
People see the other two neat choices and then you get this sissy-lookin' lump that doesn't evolve into some strong, badass-looking behemoth like the other 5 starters do. So it hardly gets picked, and disappoints when it does. Others can't look past that and see Meganium's simple charm, hence why it's railed on.

It's a shame it rarely ever happens in nearly all media where he's portrayed. From frogadier to greninja you're losing a couple of elements that have been prevalent since their base evo (especially the bubbles) and introducing completely unrelated new elements (tongue, weird pads all over the body, the body becoming literally edgy aka jagged and angular instead of curvy).
Instead of establishing a continuity, you're disrupting the design altogether and creating a creative chasm between the two. This is still true even if the underlying inspiration and concept is still the same - frogs and ninja.
