People are always bringing chesnaught up, though. I've been on those threads too, like the Chikorita line one, starterwars are ridiculous.
Chesnaught has a few big flaws. It is a defensive pokemon with very poor typing. 6 weaknesses on a tank is too many. It doesn't help that talonflame was made so powerful hitting his 4x weakness. I don't see why he needs to be fighting. He could easily have been pure grass or grass/steel (he is in armor after all). Grass/Steel would have given him 2 weaknesses instead of 6, plus a boatload more resistances.
Next, his stats are not that great for a tank. He should have much less special attack and even normal attack and speed and more def, sp def and HP.
Finally, he really doesn't have anything that sets him apart from other tanks. Spike shield is neat but not too much better than protect which every pokemon has.
Ferrothorn just does everything chesnaught wants to do better. He is the superior spiky plant.

I used to think the Oshawott family was the worst starter line but the Chespin family gives it a run for its money
Chespin is a rat wearing a leaf hat. It fits in better with Helioptile and those other normal dual type shitmons than it does with Froakie and Fennekin
Quiladin is absolutely retarded and looks more like a grass type Pignite than whatever armored beast it was probably supposed to evoke
Chesnaught retains Quiladins ridiculous tube arms and stubby fingers and opts for a disgusting beige palette with the end result looking like a mummy wearing a poncho. It completely fails to evoke a knight whereas the inspiration for both Delphox and Greninja is plainly apparent at first glance. You wouldn't even know Chesnaught was supposed to be a knight if it wasn't related to the other two.
I honestly don't think there's any pokemon as innately flawed as the Chesnaught family, you'd probably have to completely scrap all three and try again from scratch if you wanted to make a good "grass knight" pokemon.
Cestnaught looks too scrawny, and its shell too flimsy looking. Chestnaught should fill out that shell a bit, and the shell could be easily two or three times thicker. As it stands, Chestnaught looks like it is wearing a basket on its back. Chestnaught honestly looks like a second-stage evolution.
A hypothesis as too why: Starting with 6th gen, New Pokemon are designed with the expectation that they will get a mega form later, hence occasional incomplete designs.
Mechanically, Grass/Fighting just doesn't synergize very well defensively, yet Chestnaught is built to be a tank. Plus the issues of being introduced alongside Burdspam mentioned elsewhere.

The proportions are a bit fucked; it's short legged and that makes the arms look too long, which gives it a weird stiff look to the overall design. Or perhaps the arms are the ones wrong.
Anyway, the legs should be bigger regarding the leg-arm proportion.
I don't think the design is that bad, at least not to explain all the hate it gets. It's probably just a normal reaction from the retarded non-stop bara threads.
Other than that I must be the only guy that likes the normal color palette as much as the shiny.
