This is literally everyone on /vp/. When greninja was first leaked people were shitting in its design. Seeing how competitive it is and the anime treatment its been getting everyone loves it and thinks it's one of the best starter designs to date. It's just marketing people and you all fell for it.

Back when gen 4 came out I hated a lot of them, nowadays I'm mostly neutral about them.

Originally thought that this thing had arguably the worst design ever, I thought otherwise after I used it for the first time, the thing kicked hard ass has beast stats and an awesome ability.

I didn't like it at first when it had just leaked, but once there were better pictures of it, I liked it more. Although, it's very frustrating that Game Freak likes Greninja more than the other gen 6 starters.

What the hell? But Greninja looks absolutely awful and off-model in that movie. If anything, the movie made me rethink if i really liked the thing. At least until Smash revealed that awesome model and reassured my choice.
Fortunately the animators finally realized how to draw it properly and it looks Great in the anime now.

What happened with Greninja for me was more of a case of seeing the leak and finding it to be a Great, clever design, but once i saw the Amie pics of it plus the other high quality screenshots it went from being around my top 100 Pokemon to straight out becoming my Favorite pokemon overall. Also, i never had a popularbro, so it felt good to see so much good art.

No it doesn't. The theme of it's line is a petty thief becoming the ultimate thief. The bubbles were only means to an end, not the end-all-be-all to the design and the tongue scarf is one of the most clever ways i've ever seen of implementing a theme into a design.

It doesn't occupy his whole mouth, most of the art and the official models depict the tongue escaping through a tiny portion of the left or right side of the mouth, so technically he can pretty much keep his mouth completely closed with no problems. Also, it can be retracted into its mouth at will, they just doesn't do it often because they're little show-offs.
I started with a Froakie, and I liked it less after every evolution.
The best example of a pokemon growing on me would be Misdreavus. When I first saw it, I thought it was a waste. I did think it was cool that it was the only pure ghost, but otherwise I thought it was garbage. Over the years, it has grown on me, and I have come to appreciate the design. This came to a head in my Soul Silver Nuzlock where I got one from the Safari Zone and it was my BFF through the rest of the run.

It's a Pokemon, not a real-life animal. It could've had the bubbles if they wanted to because this is a fantasy setting. Granted the same argument could probably be made in favor of the tongue scarf, but i'd like Greninja regardless, so i don't mind. Though i think the bubbles would look awesome, i have to say the tongue scarf is more creative though.
This guy. I just thought a Mexican wrestling bird was extremely weird and the cameltoe was bizarre. But I got over the "can't stand seeing it" phase and decided to use it in my playthrough, and I enjoyed it.

Zygarde. I used to really dislike its design. It seemed like there was no reason, no basis behind it. But then they revealed its new forms and I started to think of it in a different way. Now it's my Top 3 favorite legendaries of all time.

I used to hate Ampharos for losing all of its fur and no longer looking like a sheep, but it grew n me as I started to enjoy pokemon designs that aren't just oddly colored animals. And now I like it even more than Mareep and Flaafy.

Looking at this image makes me think they only gave Greninja the tongue scarf so it wouldn't just look like a bigger Frogadier.
I'm completely fine with the tongue scarf if it breaks the monotony of the evolution line, but they should have given an interesting explanation for the bubble scarf.
A good design theory could be that its evolution line simply has a drooling habit, and as an adult it has enough control to only froth up when it gets angry or excited. It would have been cool to see Greninja get the bubble scarf only when he takes damage or if the AI used Swagger on him.

This was how it was for me. I leaned towards Chesnaught the most, but me and a couple friends all wanted different starters and I was left Greninja. Finding out how good he was made me enjoy using him, and it really grew on me. I never "hated" it since I do think the design is very creative, but I liked Chesnaught's "archetype" more instictually. I like when Gamefreak can still take an animal they do every gen and still make a unique design that stands out from the others.
It took like 5 months for it to grow on me.
